In the digital age, we currently live in blue light is a light wave we’re constantly surrounded by. With something, we’re exposed to so readily it’s important to be aware of both the negative and positive factors that surround blue light.
1. Blue light truly is everywhere.
The main producer of blue light is sunlight, in fact, you receive a majority of your blue light exposure outdoors during the daylight. When you come inside you experience blue light from sources such as fluorescent and LED lighting, TV’s, and most commonly electronics. With that said the exposure you receive from these devices is minimal in comparison to sunlight. The problem and worry occur due to the constant use and proximity people use their digital products. Blue light is even why the sky is blue!
2. Blue light adds to digital eye strain
Due to the high energy found in blue light, it scatters more easily than other visible light. Which means that when your looking at a device the unfocused “noise” caused by blue light reduces contrast and can add to eye strain.
3. It’s not all bad.
Some blue light exposure is essential for good health, it can help boost alertness, memory and cognitive function, and may even elevate your mood. However, too much blue light late at night can affect your sleep cycle potentially causing disruption seen as sleepless nights and daytime fatigue.
4.Filters and protective eyewear.
If your constantly being exposed to blue light via your phone, tablet, tv, or computer one convenient way to reduce your exposure is to use a blue light filter. Most devices have a blue light filter setting but it can also be found in screen protectors and glasses.
Although blue light surrounds us it’s not all bad! Taking the right amount of precautions with the use of eye protection, blue light can be a healthy asset to our everyday lives.
