Microwaves appear to be a harmless appliance in kitchens and offices all around the world. What they appear to be is not always the truth. Microwaves do have some dangers associated with use. So what are these dangers and effects?

“Microwaves heat food by causing water molecules in it to resonate at very high frequencies and eventually turn to steam which heats your food. While this can rapidly heat your food, what most people fail to realize is that it also causes a change in your food’s chemical structure.”

-Dr. Mercola

Microwaves are also known to heat food the opposite way inside out versus outside in. “Structures of the water molecules are torn apart and forcefully deformed.” This can also affect the DNA of the structure in your food. This not only rips away the nutrients in the foods, but there are effects on the body from eating microwaved food. According to Dr. Mercola there are some people who experience sickness when eating or being around microwave radiation. A few short term effects are insomnia, impaired cognition, and nausea, among others. In Dr. Mercola’s article, he also discusses the radiation leakage that happens when using a microwave. Microwaves negatively affect your food when you ingest it and when you’re in the room with it while it’s cooking. The radiation “leaks” into your environment and then into you.

Another study that was done by Swiss Food Scientist Hans Hertel has evidence of destructive effects caused by microwaving food. Several of the effects include increased cholesterol levels, decreased white blood cells, decreased hemoglobin levels, and production of radiolytic compounds (carcinogens).

There has been a study done on rats fed microwaved foods by the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. “It was observed from the result that the activities of antioxidant enzymes decreased drastically in rats fed the microwaved food as compared to their controls.”

Here are a few tips on how you can avoid microwaves in the office and at home. When at home, you can cook or reheat your food in the oven or stove versus using the microwave. It may consume more time but in the long run it’s worth it. Three great alternatives for in the office are Toaster Ovens, Crockpots, and Hotplates.
